AE Phillips Cross Country 2017

Dear Parents,

Another school year and cross country season is around the corner.  I am looking forward to a great season with lots of returning runners and hopefully many new faces.  Cross country at AEP is for students in grades first through sixth. Sixth graders will need to have a physical performed before the season starts and forms are available in the office. Race distance for all runners is one mile. Yes! It is OK for them to run/walk during practice and at races. Running is a lifetime sport and this will be the first introduction for many of them. I want this to be a fun experience for all but challenging as well. Our practices will consist of warm-ups, stretching, games, short workouts, and cool downs. It is very important that your child be committed to the entire season. Lots of activities are going on in the fall, so please refer to the cross country schedule attached to the email. Attendance at all meets is not required, but strongly encouraged. Your child will get out of cross country what they put into it.

After school practices at Cooktown Park(2800 Kavanaugh Road) will be every Tuesday and Thursday beginning August 22. Practice time will be 3:40-4:40 and this may be adjusted once carline procedures are running smoothly. Please plan to attend a brief meeting at the beginning of the first practice. As our program continues to grow, parent involvement is vital to our success. Truly, I cannot do this without you! The meet schedule that you will find attached to this email has all meets on Saturdays again this year. They normally begin around 9am with the youngest runners racing first. Once your child is finished participating, your family is free to leave the meet. Medals to the top 10 runners are usually awarded at the end of the meet.

This year we will order our apparel online ONLY. This should make the ordering process easier and quicker since we are doing it before school starts. Please note that the only required item is a racing shirt, which has an asterisk beside it. There are 3 fit options for the racing shirt this year(Youth, men, and woman). You only have to choose 1 of the required items. When checking out it, a popup may say you haven’t purchased one of the required items since there are 3 choices of fit. It will let you check out anyway. The rest of the shop items are optional. Long sleeve shirts and race shirts may be worn on Fridays during cross country season ONLY. The sweatshirts will be navy this year and may be worn ALL YEAR. The logo on all apparel will be large and centered.  We would love for parents, grandparents, and siblings to purchase apparel as well. The shop site is:

Please note this shop is only open until JULY 26! Please order on or before that time. Orders will be sent to the school and delivered to your student upon arrival.  If you have any questions, please respond to this email.  I will order car decals and have them for sale at the first practice.

There will also be a $20 cross country fee per runner to help with meet expenses and end of the year pizza and award party. Checks can be made payable to AEP Cross County. This fee is due at our first practice on 8/22. Please make sure when turning money in that it is labeled with your child’s name and “Coach Tyler-Cross Country” so teachers will know to put it in my box.

Lastly, the Remind app will again be my main source of communication during the season. Please download the app to your smart phone and text: @aepcx17 to the number 81010. This will also let me know your child(ren) will be running this year.
